In the Kyiv area, Mikhail Romanov is suspected of killing a man and raping his wife.

Because Ukraine never apprehended Romanov, any conviction would most likely be symbolic.

According to Ukrainian authorities, a Russian soldier has been accused with killing a Ukrainian man and raping his wife, and is set to stand trial in a landmark case.

On Monday, Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova announced the planned case on social media, stressing that it was the first attempt since Russia’s invasion to achieve a rape trial.

Mikhail Romanov, according to Venediktova, was a member of a tank division that assaulted towns and villages near Kyiv.

Venediktova stated Romanov was never apprehended and will be prosecuted in his absence in a Facebook post translated from Ukrainian by Insider.

Even if Romanov were convicted, Ukraine would be powerless to punish him without first capturing him.

She stated that the perpetrators were males “In one of the communities, they stormed into a house and shot the owner. Following the murder, a drunken soldier and another invader raped his wife many times.

“They threatened the mother with guns and violence, including violence toward her kid, who was present at the time.

“Even though the accused is not now in our custody, he will face a fair trial and be held accountable to the law.”

The testimony corresponds to a similar event detailed by prosecutors in March, which was still being investigated at the time. In the previous story, no one was mentioned as a suspect.

The victim was able to identify Romanov through images on social media, Venediktova told The Guardian earlier in May.

Venediktova informed the journal that Ukrainian officials had no idea what had happened to him, implying that he may have been deported to Russia, was still fighting in Ukraine, or had been murdered.

The Guardian said that it had attempted to reach Romanov’s alleged partner for comment but had gotten no answer. Insider was unable to reach Romanov due to a lack of information.

The news came after a Russian soldier admitted to killing a 62-year-old Ukrainian man in Kyiv.

Vadim Shishimarin, 21, was condemned to life in jail after his trial, which was the first of a Russian accused of any war crime during the invasion.

Russian soldiers are accused of committing 10,000 war crimes in Ukraine during their three-month invasion, including hundreds of acts of rape and sexual abuse, according to Ukrainian officials.

Ukrainian officials said that Russian forces raped a one-year-old boy, who subsequently died from his injuries.

International Criminal Court investigators are collaborating with Ukrainian officials to gather evidence of alleged war crimes. Russia has categorically denied that its forces are targeting civilians in any way.
